How It All Started
The president of The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Foundation for Opioid Research and Education, Dr. Asif Ilyas, is an orthopaedic surgeon who has recently helped his foundation become an integral part of a groundbreaking, national project that will help spearhead the foundation’s mission.
This foundation’s mission is dedicated to funding and advancing research and education aimed at finding solutions to the opioid epidemic and combating opioid addiction. The ROI Foundation for Opioid Research and Education aims to raise awareness in the lay and medical communities of the risks and benefits of safe opioid use while educating patients, physicians and policymakers on safe opioid use after injuries and surgeries. Overall, this foundation supports research and educational efforts aimed at improving and innovating pain management strategies that can result in decreased opioid use and advance to alternatives to opioids.
A National Collaboration That Will Lead to Solutions
During the 2020 presidential campaign, Dr. Asif Ilyas had an intriguing conversation with current President Joe Biden, and President Biden showed great interest in the ROI Foundation for Opioid Research and Education’s mission statement and cause. They then joined forces with many other national health organizations including the CDC, DEA, and FDA to form the Health Policy Committee. The goal of this committee is to create and authorize an innovative strategy around the opioid epidemic and addiction through federal policy.
Dr. Asif Ilyas, representing the ROI Foundation for Opioid Research and Education, has taken a cabinet-level position for the coordination of efforts to fight the opioid epidemic on a federal scale. By collaborating with national organizations and being hands-on with federal policymakers, Dr. Asif Ilyas will be an integral part of creating federal public policy to combat the opioid epidemic and addiction. This opportunity for the ROI Foundation for Opioid Research and Education will pave the way for a national combative effort that will make a large-scale difference for Americans that deal and suffer with pain-related opioid addiction.
